It is not all that uncommon for vendors to be months behind on compatibility with a new OS release.

I went thought this with Juniper SSL VPN host checker (and other manufacturer platforms).

Typically the way I approached it was to send out a note setting the expectation for the users.

Forticlient 5.6 for windows

FortiClient endpoint compliance is now enforced by FortiOS where administrator can either warn or block non-compliant endpoints. FortiClient dashboard will display the compliance status and reason for non-compliance. FortiClient dashboard will also include information on the configuration settings that is causing non-compliance. See Compliance.

If they choose to upgrade the latest OS, it may take time for VPN access to sync up and in the interim, users may have very limited or no access at all.

In the final sentence, I recommended having a VPN access plan-b that they test in advance of upgrading (boot from older OS backup or login from another computer).

How do setup / connect an SSL-VPN connection to a FortiGate firewall?

I did already download the Forticlient.

On windows I see an 'REMOTE ACCESS' on the left side of the client.

Howeve on Ubuntu 18.04 / Linux I do not see the same menu:

So how do I setup / connect a SSL-VPN-tunnel using Linux (Ubuntu 18.04)

Most of the fortinet Knowledgebase pages are mostly blank :/
Tested with Firefox and Chromium.

Also is it possible with standard linux tools to connect?

The remote access is currently not available in Forticlient 6.0 for Linux. You can see the official compatibility chart when you scroll down in the following link:Forticlient compatibility

You can use the openfortivpn client:Installing openfortivpn

FortiClient 6.2, Fabric Agent with Endpoint Protection and Cloud Sandbox, can be purchased and the Linux version supports SSL VPN:FortiClient 6.2 Compatibility
