I have floppy discs which were written using another computer. The computer had windows XP service pack 3 installed. The floppy drive both wrote and read the discs without a problem, I now have a different computer with windows 7 installed; A couple of discs read o.k but the others just cause two messages to be generated; one stating that 'You need to format the disc in drive A:/ before use'; another stating 'A:/ is not accessible, the disc media is not recognised, the disc may not be formatted'. All the discs contain data. When interogating the drive properties a full disc is shown in the instances where the discs cannot be read, but a portion of unused disc space is shown on the discs that are accessible. The previous computer was a Packard bell using the ntfs file system. I now have an Acer running the 64 bit edition of windows 7 also ntfs. The floppy drive is a Smartdisc x2 usb. Strangely one of the readable discs contains fat files. Any advice that I could understand would be greatly appreciated.

Capacity - This should be set to 3.5', 1.44 MB. Most users can leave this as is.
File system - This should be set to FAT. Most users can leave this as is, unless you are formatting the disk for use with a specific file system. FAT is supported on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Allocation unit size - This should be set to Default allocation size. Most users can leave this at default.
Volume label - Choose a name for the disk that will appear when it is inserted. Try to keep it to 16 characters or less.
Format options. You can select 'Quick Format' to format the disk quicker, but the data will not be securely deleted. The speed gains for quick formatting a floppy disk are negligible, so you're probably best leaving this unchecked. You can also choose to create an MS-DOS startup disk, which is useful if you're troubleshooting an older machine, but you won't be able to use the disk for storage.
