How To Turn Off Google Safe Browsing In Chrome
Phising Toolbars – Google Chrome can warn you if it detects that the site you’re trying to visit is suspected of phishing or containing malware. If you would like to install a supplemental toolbar add-in, see our Free Internet Security Software article. BitDefender TrafficLight works with Google Chrome to secure your browsing. Google Chrome, Chromium, and probably the majority of web browsers based on it, come with a security module that scans file downloads automatically. The feature, called Safe Browsing by Google, displays a prompt at the bottom of the browser screen that informs you about malicious files that it has detected.
Unchecking Enable phishing and malware protection in Chrome's browser settings page does not prevent Chrome from communicating with safebrowsing.clients.google.com and safebrowsing-cache.google.com (according to packets captured using Wireshark).
How can I disable this feature?

You could edit your hosts file, which will block the traffic. Maybe there is a less brute force way, but I'm sure this will work.
Add the following to your hosts file in Linux and Windows:
Add the following to your hosts file in OSX:
Your hosts file is found at the following location:
- Windows XP and later:
c:windowssystem32driversetchosts
- Linux:
/etc/hosts
- OSX:
/private/etc/hosts

Mac OSX information added from JTM's answer to ensure everyone seeing this gets the correct information.
Adding 127.0.0.1
for safebrowsing-clients.google.com
or safebrowsing-cache.google.com
does not help. I did just that and according my suricata logs it is still pointing to the Google's real addresses, so browser does not use hosts
file for that. I also tcpdump
ed the whole C-class where it previously pointed and still there is traffic to these addresses while I request totally different web sites.
However string match in iptables does the trick:
So a bit awkward and works only in Linux, but it works.
JawaIn response to Paul's post, the OS X file is /private/etc/hosts. Don't use 127.0.0.1 on OS X. Use 0.0.0.0. You want it to return no route, not a route to the localhost.

Why isn't there a button for unhelpful information?
Anyway why hasn't this been fixed? It's been around for years now, Microsoft is LAZY. I didn't even want to 'upgrade' I was happy with win 8.1, and had refused win 10 multiple times, but apparently my choice doesn't matter.

This is not at all what he's saying, he's saying it doesn't work in Microsoft edge, at no point did he say he has a problem with windows he even specifically said that it works in all the other browsers. How do we take the safe search off in Microsoft edge was the question we were all asking.

Try this.
When navigating to your user accounts does it show your account as a child?
Most people like myself had numerous emails for other things, and what I had noticed is somehow I had made my main account a family member to my other.
So head over to here - https://account.microsoft.com/family/
And check to see if you have been made a family member, first thing I did was disabled the smart search and then removed my self as a family member.
Close your browser, and restart. That should have fixed your issue..
This feature is a joke, it stopped me from finding even pages for night outs on facebook too!
