Most Web browser address bars also function as search bars, enabling you to search the Internet through Google without first navigating to Google's website. But if you frequently use applications other than browsers, you may want a way to run Google search without even opening a browser window. For example, if you run a desktop publishing program and edit a business report, you may need to search Google while fact checking. You can search Google from the Windows taskbar using the Address toolbar.

Chrome1.

Right-click on the taskbar and click 'Properties' to open the 'Taskbar and Start Menu Properties' dialog box.

3.

Tick the 'Address' check box to select it; then click 'OK' to add the Address toolbar to the taskbar.

4.

Type your search terms into the address bar to add a pop-up search prompt. For example, if you type 'population of London,' the prompt will read 'Search for 'population of London'.'

5.

Click the prompt to search for your terms using Google in your default Web browser.

  • If Google is not your default search provider, a different search tool will open in your browser. Google offers instructions for setting your default search in each browser (link in Resources). For example, if you use Google Chrome, click the 'Wrench' icon, click 'Settings' and choose 'Google' in the page's Search section.
